Muslim Council of Britain Unveils Leadership Candidates for Historic 2025 Election

Two doctors and prominent community activists, Dr. Muhammad Adrees and Dr. Mohammed Wajid Akhter, will vie for the position of Secretary General in the Muslim Council of Britain’s January election. The contest also features Maswood Ahmed and Lamine Konate competing for the role of Deputy Secretary General in the organisation’s upcoming leadership transition.

Today, the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) announces its candidates for the 2025 election to fill positions including Secretary General, Deputy Secretary General, Treasurer, and National Council members.  

The MCB will also host hustings across the UK, providing communities the opportunity to meet and question candidates. An additional televised hustings will air on a leading community TV channel.

Khalid Sofi, Election Commissioner, says, “This election is a vital opportunity for British Muslims to shape the future of the MCB. The hustings provide a direct link for communities to meet candidates and hear their visions.”

The candidates for Secretary General are:

  • Dr. Muhammad Adrees
  • Dr. Mohammed Wajid Akhter

The candidates for Deputy Secretary General are:

  • Maswood Ahmed
  • Lamine Konate

Hustings have been organised for the candidates to present their visions. The details are:

  • Tuesday 7th January 2025, 5pm London
  • Saturday / Sunday 11th – 12th January 2025, Birmingham and Manchester (TBC)

Muslim Council of Britain’s Election Process 

Under the MCB’s constitution, the current Secretary General completes her second two-year term in January, reaching the organisation’s four-year term limit for the position.

The MCB’s leadership elections take place during its Annual General Meeting in London, where affiliated organisations send delegates to vote. On January 25, 2025, delegates will elect a Secretary General, Deputy Secretary General, and 40 National Council members for the 2025-2027 term. Candidates for leadership positions must be British citizens or have indefinite leave to remain, hold membership in an MCB affiliate. They must provide a manifesto outlining their experience and vision, pass a DBS check, and be nominated as National Council delegates.
