Over the coming months there will be a great deal of debate on the merits of remaining in the European Union. All of us will be listening attentively to both sides of the debate before we exercise our democratic right and cast our vote. We encourage all British Muslims to take part in this process.

How British Muslims choose to vote is up to each individual voter. The Muslim Council of Britain will not be adopting a position on the referendum, whether it be for leaving or remaining in the European Union. We recognise there are different views on this, and all we ask for is an informed debate that does not scapegoat minorities.

Individual affiliates, and leaders inside and outside of the Muslim Council of Britain will have their own views on the referendum, and will no doubt express them as they see fit, but not as views of the Muslim Council of Britain as a whole. The MCB will offer to host a debate in the coming months on the referendum, and invite both sides of the debate to articulate how joining or leaving will affect the lives of British Muslims.
