Dr Ayyub Thakur, President of the World Kashmir Freedom Movement passed away in London, this morning, March 10th, 2004 at 10.20 am. He was suffering from pulmonary fibrosis and was 55 years of age.

“Dr Thakur was a universally loved figure among British Muslims. His name will be enshrined in the annals of modern Kashmiri history for his lifelong dedication in working to highlight the fundamental right of the people of Kashmir to self-determination. In 2000, Dr Thakur founded Mercy Universal, a UK-based charity, which works to alleviate the suffering of the Kashmiri people at the hands of the Indian occupation forces. We will all miss him deeply,” said Iqbal Sacranie, Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Britain.

Funeral prayers (salat al-janaza) for Dr Ayyub Thakur will be held at the Islamic Cultural Centre, Regent’s Park, London, immediately following Jumu’ah prayers this Friday March 12th 2004.

After the funeral prayers, the burial of Dr Ayyub Thakur will take place at the Gardens of Peace cemetery, Hainault, Essex.

Dr Ayyub Thakur is survived by his wife and a son and two daughters.
