The Muslim Council of Britain condemns utterly the vile criminals responsible for today’s series of explosions in Baghdad and Karbala, and the shootings in Quetta, Pakistan, which have killed and maimed hundreds of innocent Muslims who had been commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Husayn.

“The people of Iraq and Pakistan are in our thoughts and in our prayers. The perpetrators of these terrible crimes – committed on the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Husayn – are clearly trying to set Sunni and Shi’a communities against one another. They must not be allowed to succeed. We sincerely hope that the leaders of the two communities will respond in a considered manner and refuse to allow themselves to be provoked into an internecine conflict in which the main victims can only be the people of Iraq and Pakistan themselves,” said Iqbal Sacranie, Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Britain.
