The Institutional Capacity Building Initiative (ICBI)

Course Overview

This program covers 2 important topics – Civic Engagement and Building Relationships

Civic Engagement

In an increasingly challenging external environment, the essence of civic engagement is to encourage ordinary citizens to participate in the local community to not only help improve current conditions for the entire community but to also shape its future for the better.

This is a responsibility upon all Muslims and the Quran encourages us to engage with any project that seeks to do good (Quran 5:2).

The contents of this section of the course will seek to educate participants on:
•How and in what ways to get involved in community work
•Isolation vs entryism
•How to ensure the whole Muslim community is included
•An understanding of what our local communities need
•How to deal with conflicts within a community
•Team working skills

Building Partnerships

This topic seeks to ensure that generations of Muslims are able to increase their social and professional networks in order to seek the common good. Recently news and headlines have tried to project Muslims as being unable to integrate into local communities and the wider society. What better time is there to showcase Islam’s teachings to be kind and helpful to our neighbors and the community. The Prophet (peace and blessing may be upon him) taught us that a neighbour does not just include the one next door but goes out to include those up to 40 houses in all directions.

Furthermore, the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said on the rights of our neighbor: “It is to help him if he asks your help, to lend him if he asks to borrow from you, to satisfy his needs if he becomes poor, to console him if he is visited by an affliction, to congratulate him if is met with good fortune, to visit him if he becomes ill, to attend his funeral if he dies, not to make your house higher than his without his consent lest you deny him the breeze, to offer him fruit when you buy some or to take it to your home secretly if you do not do that, nor to send out your children with it so as not to upset his children, nor to bother him by the tempting smell of your food unless you send him some.”

Thus it is an obligation on all of us to better our relationship with our neighbours and the wider community and this course looks to help build and strengthen those partnerships.

This section will specifically cover:

How to build new relationships
Repairing broken relationship and best practices on maintaining positive relations
Dealing with difficult people in the community
How to engage the entire Muslim community in this initiative

Duration

What are the benefits of this course?

Recent examples such as the flooding in Cumbria in 2015 have shown that building partnerships and relationships through active civil work can do a lot more to counter negative stereotypes than many other forms of persuasion. This course seeks to empower people who want to actively participate in British social life through positive community and civic works that will benefit everyone. It also aims to inspire all to foster better relationships that can bring meaningful change.
