Amidst ongoing challenges for our communities in the wake of the distressing crisis in Palestine, and the surge of Islamophobic hate crimes targeting mosques, the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) remains committed to supporting our Mosques.

Mosques are under heightened threats from Islamophobic hate crimes in current times. Particularly those that encourage democratic participation, such as peaceful advocacy for human rights, justice and safety for oppressed victims around the globe (including of Israeli attacks in Gaza). There have been numerous reported hate crime attacks and vandalism to Mosques around the UK in recent weeks (one particular Mosque in London targeted 4 times in successive weeks). From attempted arson, offensive graffiti stating ‘IDF’, red paint sprayed over gates, decapitated Pigs head being thrown inside premises – the list goes on. Our authorities and mainstream media must take extra care and responsibility to help prevent misinformation to preserve the safety and security of Muslims and mosques.

Press stories of apparent ill worded statements from a few individual Imams must be treated with sensitivity and context. Whilst police investigations are ongoing, the Muslim Council of Britain has always advocated responsible sermons, emphasising inter-community harmony and to avoid hate speech towards any group. Mosques in Britain are in complete adherence to this, as mandated by law. That said a clear distinction must be made between criticism of a religion and its followers, with criticism of a nation State (like Israel) responsible for atrocities against innocent civilians including the killing of over 6000 children in Gaza.

We must also stress the need for cultural sensitivity and caution against mistranslations of Arabic prayers. Some Arabic expressions carry nuanced meanings that may be misunderstood by those unfamiliar with Muslim customs, prayers or the Arabic language.

We affirm the protected right of all religious communities, including Muslims, to pray for victims of suffering without fear of scrutiny. Mosques like other places of worship play a vital role in society. Embodying freedom of religion, expression, providing communal mental health, well being and social support.

The MCB Mosque Guide is a handy resource to help our centres foster open communication and positive community relations. Together, we navigate current challenges with empathy, understanding, and a commitment to justice and religious freedom.
