End to Indefinite Detention of Foreign Nationals in Britain – At Last

The Muslim Council of Britain broadly welcomes today’s announcement by the Home Secretary, Charles Clarke, in which he declared an end to the government’s policy of indefinitely detaining foreign terror suspects.

`The MCB has long argued that the indefinite detention of these foreign terror suspects was discriminatory and that their continued incarceration without charge in Belmarsh prison represented our very own mini-Guantanamo Bay. The MCB’s position was given added support last month following the ruling by the Law Lords which declared that the indefinite detention of these foreign national was unlawful. So it is encouraging that the government is now looking at more humane alternatives to indefinite detention,’ said Iqbal Sacranie, Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Britain.

The MCB believes that the cornerstone of any judicial system is to have open justice with transparency and accountability.
