George Floyd Murder, One Year On: Muslim Council of Britain Calls for Action on Injustice and Inequality

Today marks the first anniversary of the murder of George Floyd by Derek Chauvin – a serving police officer at the time. The brutal manner in which Mr. Floyd was killed captured the attention the world and let to widespread calls for decisive action to tackle injustice, inequality and institutional racism.

The Muslim Council of Britain’s Secretary General, Zara Mohammed said:

“The anniversary of George Floyd’s murder is a powerful reminder of the great injustices that still remains to be tackled within our societies. Institutional racism continues to be reflected in the attitude and behaviours of those with power. Rampant inequality is very much embedded in our social structures, resulting in devastating consequences for present and future generations. Evidence of the treatment of black communities in the US and the UK suggests a culture of over-policing, unfair targeting and suspicion. The need for an equitable justice system, as well as policies that serve all of society fairly, remain a pre-requisite to real and meaningful change.

On this first anniversary of George Floyd’s murder, we must all – leaders, policymakers, citizens — meaningfully act to reflect the consensus in society that Black lives matter everywhere, every day.”

The Muslim Council of Britain is committed to tackling anti-Black racism in the UK, including within Muslim communities. Our ‘Proudly Muslim and Black’ project aims to promote greater inclusivity within Muslim communities, and draw attention to the institutional barriers faced by British Black Muslim communities.
