Muharram is one of the four sacred months for Muslims across the globe. It’s coming heralds the beginning of the new hijri year and is a time for reflection and blessings.

The month marks many notable events in Islamic history; including Prophet Moses and his people being saved from the tyranny of the Pharoah, and the events of Karbala in which grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Imam Hussain, gave his life standing against injustice and tyranny.

MCB Secretary General, Zara Mohammed said:

“Muharram reminds us of stories of sacrifice a time to consider how we are tackling injustice. The world around us is rife with these challenges from a global refugee crisis, people fleeing their homes from persecution and war to those seeking to deal with famine and drought. Closer to home we know many are now dealing with the rising cost of living and the lasting impact of the pandemic.

Despite it all, we see renewed strength and vigor across communities, seeking to be a source of goodness and help for all, bringing relief to those in need, and calling out injustice and inequality.  It will be through our collective strength and partnership that we overcome these obstacles and it will be through our faith and hope in God, we find the strength to do so.

We look forward to the new year with confidence that better times are ahead. I wish everyone a blessed new year.”
