The month of Muharram is the first month in the Hijri – or Islamic – calendar. Today, on the first of Muharram, we welcome the Islamic new year. The month is revered as one of the four holy months observed by Muslims worldwide and this sacred time provides an opportunity for pause, introspection and reflection.

Many notable events in our history occurred during Muharram, including: Prophet Musa (Moses) and his people being saved from the tyranny of the Pharaoh, the migration of the Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) from Mecca to Medina and the events of Karbala in which grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Imam Hussain (may Allah be pleased with him), made the ultimate sacrifice in the fight against injustice and tyranny.

Commenting on the beginning of the Islamic new year, MCB Secretary General, Zara Mohammed said:

“As we welcome Muharram, let us reflect on our own circumstance and on the many challenges we face both nationally and internationally.

“From the cost of living crisis impacting communities across the UK, to conflict and the human suffering it causes the world over, the historical relevance of this month remains as pertinent as ever. Let us use this opportunity to renew our intention to move forth with resilience and humanity. May our faith, hope and collective strength act as a bulwark against these trials.

“We look forward to the new year mindful of the challenges we face, and with confidence that, together, we can ensure better times lay ahead of us. I wish everyone a blessed new year.”
