Ahead of Friday prayers today, the Muslim Council of Britain is calling upon all Mosques, charities and communities to remember the human tragedy unfolding in East Africa. As more than 10m men, women and children travel desperately in search of water and assistance, the need for emergency aid is increasing by the hour. The United Nations has already declared famine in two regions of Southern Somalia.
Leading British Muslim charities are appealing for donations, a call which the MCB is urging British Muslims to respond to.
Farooq Murad, Secretary General of the MCB said:
“Now is the time for the world to unite to prevent this crisis turning into a catastrophe. Our government and the wider public have already responded with characteristic generosity. But we must do more including our efforts in calling on the international community to live up to its obligations to provide greater financial aid”.
He added “once again British Muslim charities have led the way in raising funds and providing aid on the ground. As we approach the blessed month of Ramadan, let us not forget today those who are waiting for us to respond”.
“Whoever saved a life it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind” (Qur’an 5:32)
