The Muslim Council of Britain, together with Afzal Khan MP, hosted a session in parliament to mark the inaugural UN International Day to Combat Islamophobia, observed on Wednesday 15th March 2023.
Falling on the 4th Anniversary of the Christchurch terror attack, and set against the backdrop of increased hate crime against British Muslims, and targeting of Muslim communities across the globe, this day was critical in acknowledging the work still to be done by governments to tackle the scourge of Islamophobia.
The event brought together parliamentarians from across the political spectrum, the Lord Mayor of Westminster, Ambassadors and members of civic society to express their solidarity with British Muslim communities, and pledge to tackle Islamophobia in all of its guises.
Commenting on the importance of the day, and marking it in parliament, MCB Secretary-General Zara Mohammed, said:
“Today, we marked the inaugural UN International Day to Combat Islamophobia, a historic occasion in the global fight against Islamophobia, by hosting an event in parliament. Together, we made a bold statement of unity and recognised that we must all work together to to tackle Islamophobia at its root.”
