The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) welcomes the start of Refugee Week, celebrated from 17th to 23rd June, on the theme of #OurHome. This annual, week-long observance is marked globally to honour the resilience and contributions of refugees.
Figures from UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reveal, 117.3 million people worldwide forced to flee their homes, including 43.4 million refugees—40% of whom are under 18—this week serves as a vital reminder of the ongoing humanitarian crises.
The MCB will also be supporting ‘Fair Begins Here Promise’ a pledge to take action for a fair new plan for refugees.
To mark the start of Refugee Week, MCB Secretary General, Zara Mohammed said: “At a time when political rhetoric becomes more hostile to refugees and as conflicts force even more people to flee their homes, we join civil society and global voices across the world to share a message of welcome. None of us would want to be without a home, and those who are forced to leave theirs deserve our compassion and help. That is why I’m so glad to see so many initiatives dedicated to this cause.
As part of Eid Al Adha celebration, the MCB has launched again our Eid with Refugees campaign to bring communities together to celebrate.
As the world observes Refugee Day on 20th June, we reflect on ongoing conflicts, such as those in Gaza and Sudan, which highlight the need to change our politics and narrative towards the most vulnerable, often children. This spirit of compassion and hospitality embodies the true essence of Britain in welcoming others.”
The MCB successful Eid with Refugees campaign will support Mosques across the UK to host Eid parties for their local refugee communities, providing a space for celebration and community building. Mosques can still sign up here.
