On Saturday, December 2, 2023, the MCB leadership team, represented by Secretary General Zara Mohammed and Assistant Secretary General, Dr. Shahzad Amin, participated in the launch of the largest mosque umbrella organization in the North—Greater Manchester Council for Mosques (GmCoM).
The Greater Manchester region boasts a substantial Muslim community with figures from the last census showing the Muslim population in the region at 373,877 an increase of 13.04% from the previous census contributing to its vibrant diversity. However, challenges such as socio-economic disparities and the pressing need for adequate representation became evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving a void that required filling.
The Council of Mosques emerges as an initiative to empower communities and foster a more unified voice.
Recognising the importance of collaboration in these challenging times, Secretary General Zara Mohammed, alongside Dr. Hany, founder of Islamic Relief, emphasized the critical role that Councils of Mosques can play in addressing socio-economic issues, strategic regional challenges and advocating for political representation.
Zara Mohammed stated, “We are navigating difficult times as Muslim communities, both locally and globally. There is an imperative for collective action to address growing challenges in socio-economic issues and political representation. Councils of Mosques can play a pivotal role in supporting this critical work alongside the MCB.”
