The Muslim Council of Britain reaffirms the urgent call for a ceasefire in Gaza in light of alarming statistics from ‘The Lancet’s’ recent study: “Counting the Dead in Gaza: Difficult but Essential”

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has reached a critical point, with estimates suggesting that up to 186,000 or more deaths could be attributable to the violence. Given the 2022 Gaza Strip population estimate of 2.4 million this staggering figure translates to 8% of the total population. In other words, 8% of the Palestinian population has been killed due to the Israeli siege.

These numbers highlight the profound and tragic impact of the conflict on Gaza’s residents. The scale of devastation is difficult to comprehend, yet it is essential to acknowledge and address this humanitarian crisis. The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) expresses deep concern over these alarming statistics and the ongoing loss of life in this brutal conflict.

The MCB urgently urges the UK government to push for an immediate ceasefire and ensure that international law and human rights are upheld. It is imperative that steps are taken to protect the lives and well-being of innocent civilians in Gaza including ending the sale of arms to Israel.
