The Muslim Council of Britain welcomes the publication of yesterday’s European Union report on the worrying increase in anti-Muslim prejudice and attacks in Europe in the aftermath of the 11 September attacks. The report warned politicians and the media to desist from demonising immigrants and asylum seekers a code word for Muslims.

“This report confirms our fears that under cover of the ‘war on terrorism’ standards have been lowered when it comes to writing about Islam and Muslims by some sections of the media. Leading columnists and politicians are using inflammatory language which can only contribute to feeding anti-Muslim feelings,” said Iqbal Sacranie, Secretary-General of the MCB.

The MCB therefore calls upon the Government to urgently introduce legislation to outlaw incitement to religious hatred and religious discrimination.
