The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) welcomes the damning judgment today by the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
On the ultimate question of whether Israeli action has plausibly been genocidal, the Court has ruled against Israel based on the evidence brought by South Africa. It specifically highlighted the genocidal statements by Israeli leaders.
Further to this judgement, the Court ruled (almost unanimously) that the situation was so urgent that unprecedented provisional measures be enacted. In particular, it ruled that Israel must take all necessary measures within its power to prevent genocide, including stopping the killing of Palestinians.
Zara Mohammed, Secretary General, Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) said,
“Today’s judgment marks a powerful moment in history. We commend South Africa’s leadership for recognizing the devastating impact of this siege and the urgent need to halt more grave atrocities.
With the death toll surpassing 25,000 Palestinians, our disappointment resonates with many as the court refrains from calling for an immediate ceasefire. Nevertheless, we recognise, the judgment represents an important step toward justice and upholding the rights of Palestinians.
It is now imperative that our government and the opposition parties uphold the rule of international law, disassociate with all those who have made genocidal statements, and work towards enacting the provisions laid out by the Court.”
