The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) welcomes the vote today by the United Nations Security Council for an immediate ceasefire.
The ongoing Israeli siege and bombardment of Gaza remains alarming. According to reports, over 90 percent of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have been displaced, with conditions deteriorating rapidly due to the total Israeli siege and bombardment. The United Nations has already warned that Gaza is on the brink of famine, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
Zara Mohammed, Secretary-General of the MCB, said: “We have been advocating for an immediate and permanent cessation of the killing and bombardment since the outset of this crisis. Whilst welcome this resolution we still stress the need for it to be permanent and long lasting for meaningful peace.
We are now half way through the holy month of Ramadan and near 6 months of indiscriminate killings by Israel of Palestinians. It is deeply distressing the death toll stands at 32,000 killed predominantly women and children, and over 70,000 people wounded. It is unconscionable we witness near 2.3 million facing catastrophic hunger and famine.
Humanitarian aid must be allowed to reach those in need without impediment and an immediate and permanent ceasefire be implemented without delay. We urge our Government to ensure this resolution is implemented.”
The Muslim Council of Britain stands in solidarity with the people of Gaza and urges the protection of civilian lives.
