The Muslim Council of Britain welcomes the release today of the British peace activist, Norman Kember, and his two Canadian colleagues, in Iraq.

‘Norman Kember is a man who cares deeply for the people of Iraq and his kidnap and detention was completely unjustifiable. Our faith of Islam holds in great esteem the peaceful bridge-building work that Mr Kember was involved in. We are delighted for him and his family that he has been released unharmed. As much as we all rejoice at the safe release of Norman Kember and his colleagues, we continue to witness scores of innocent deaths on a daily basis which causes immense pain to the families of innocent victims. It is the responsibility of the international community, with the support of the Iraqi government and its people, to bring stability and peace to the country. Unfortunately, the terrible devastation unleashed by the US/UK invasion of Iraq on the people of that country continues unabated,’ said Sir Iqbal Sacranie, Secretary-General of the MCB.

The MCB commends the work of all those who contributed to the efforts to secure Mr. Kember’s release.
