Today we mark the 27th anniversary of the massacres in Srebrenica, in which over 8,000 Bosniak-Muslims were murdered in the worst atrocity in Europe since the Second World War. The theme for this year’s Srebrenica Memorial Day is “Combatting Denial: Challenging Hatred”

Acknowledging what happened, and rejecting attempts at historical revisionism which brings with it division and hatred, is important to truly honour the victims and survivors. In the face of rising Islamophobia across Europe, we must all stand together to challenge hatred.

Zara Mohammed, Secretary-General of the MCB, said:

“I will never forget my visit to the Srebrenica memorial where I heard harrowing tales from survivors and those still waiting to find the bodies of their loved ones. We must combat denial to ensure that the genocide of Bosniak-Muslims at Srebrenica continues to be remembered, as one of the worst atrocities committed on European soil.

Amidst a climate in which Islamophobia has become far too pervasive, we must come together, firm in our commitment to challenging hatred and prejudice, and build a just society that is inclusive of all.”
