EDI strategy & demographic monitoring

Measures the practical application of ʿAdl (justice), Musāwāt (equality), and Iḥsān (excellence) through a documented EDI strategy and lawful, voluntary, anonymised monitoring of representation, access, experience, and outcomes. Rooted in the Maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah (objectives of Islamic law), this approach upholds Karāmah (human dignity) and ensures equitable care for the diverse Ummah (community). Regular analysis with EqIAs and board review drives corrective action, closes equity gaps, builds trust, and improves service equity.

Fiqh Principles

Al-ḍarar yuzāl

Harm must be removed; supports privacy safeguards in data collection to prevent individual harm.

Sadd al-dharā’iʿ

Blocking the means to harm; justifies strict access controls and anonymisation.

Dīwān registers

A precedent for demographic monitoring established by ʿUmar to track community composition and stipends, enabling equitable allocation.

Governance Obligations (Al-Māwardī)

The principle that justice and merit are core governance duties that override any factional preferences.

Islamic Concepts

ʿAdl

Justice, which demands fair access, processes, and outcomes across an organisation.

Musāwāt

Equality, which requires that dignity, opportunity, and participation are not contingent on ethnicity, gender, disability, or socio-economic status.

Iḥsān

The pursuit of excellence. In this context, it means moving beyond the minimum requirements of justice (ʿAdl) to proactively create an environment of profound inclusion, belonging, and flourishing for all.
