CWE-ES-01 Compassion, Welfare & Environment Environment & Sustainability CORE Excellence v2.9.7

Regular community cleanup or environmental projects

Assesses whether the organization conducts regular community cleanup or environmental projects (e.g., litter picks, tree and hedgerow planting, pollinator gardens, river/pond cleanups, habitat restoration), demonstrating a commitment to environmental stewardship and proactive community action. These efforts reflect the Islamic principle of Khilafah (stewardship), treating the natural world as an Amanah (sacred trust). Furthermore, such initiatives embody the prophetic tradition of removing harm from the path, promoting Hifz al-Bi'ah (protection of the environment) for the well-being of all creation.

Assessment Questions
  1. How does the organization plan and schedule its community cleanup or environmental projects?
  2. How is the annual environmental programme approved and overseen (e.g., trustee minute, risk register)?
  3. Who is responsible for organizing and leading these environmental initiatives, and are roles (Safeguarding, First Aid) clearly appointed?
  4. How does the organization engage with community partners and conduct due diligence on them?
  5. How does the organization measure and report on the impact of its environmental stewardship activities?
  6. In what ways does the organization integrate Islamic principles of Khilāfah (stewardship) and Iṣlāḥ (reform) into the promotion and execution of these projects?
  7. How does the organization obtain landowner/council permissions and check for TPO/SSSI constraints?
  8. How are safeguarding, first aid, manual handling, and sharps risks managed?
  9. How is waste segregated and transferred lawfully (e.g., council collection or registered carrier)?
  10. How are wildlife protections observed (e.g., nesting season, invasive species controls)?
  11. Show one example where post-project review actions changed the next event plan.
Evidence Requirements
  • Annual calendar or schedule showing planned environmental events.
  • Project plans, promotional materials, and post-event reports.
  • Insurance schedule showing Public Liability limit (e.g., £5m) and Employers’ Liability where required.
  • Named role appointment sheet and toolbox talk/volunteer briefing sign-in logs.
  • Evidence of partnerships, such as MOUs or joint communication.
  • Impact reports or metrics (e.g., data on waste collected, trees planted, areas restored).
  • Educational materials linking the environmental work to Islamic teachings.
  • Approved risk assessments (MHSWR) and event safety plan.
  • Landowner/council permissions and any TPO checks.
  • Waste transfer notes or council collection confirmation.
  • First aider roster and incident/near-miss log.
  • Safeguarding plan, DBS rationale/checks, and privacy notice for volunteers.
  • Tree/habitat maintenance plan with survival survey.
Scoring Guidelines
LevelRatingDescription
5 5/5 Regular, diverse projects (≥4 events/yr); participation ≥50 volunteers total or ≥10% of active membership; High Impact (achieve ONE of: ≥150 kg litter, ≥100 trees with ≥75% survival, ≥200 m² habitat restored, or ≥200m hedgerow); partnerships in place; publish results.
4 4/5 At least 2 projects per year; participation ≥25 volunteers total or ≥5% membership; Medium Impact (achieve ONE of: ≥75 kg litter, ≥50 trees with ≥70% survival, ≥100 m² habitat restored, or ≥100m hedgerow); basic impact report.
3 3/5 At least 2 events/yr; some participation (≥10 volunteers/event avg); basic output metrics only (e.g., bag count, hours).
2 2/5 Occasional projects (1 per year) or ad-hoc activity.
1 1/5 No environmental projects conducted.
