Use of Renewable Energy Sources

This criterion evaluates the use of renewable energy, reflecting the duty of khilāfah (stewardship) over the environment. By reducing its carbon footprint, the organization serves the maṣlaḥah (public interest), enhances operational resilience, and builds trust with its stakeholders. The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that removing harm is charity (Sahih Muslim 35); reducing pollution and emissions through renewables is a modern form of removing harm (lā ḍarar), benefiting neighbors and the wider creation.

Fiqh Principles

Maṣlaḥah

A principle of public interest used as a basis for policy when it clearly prevents harm and secures benefit.

Maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah

The higher objectives of Islamic law, which include safeguarding life, health, and preserving resources for future generations.

Ḥimā

Protected zones or reserves established for environmental protection and resource conservation.

Hisbah

The principle of public and market oversight to ensure that communal duties and ethical standards are upheld.

Sadd al-Dharā'i

Blocking the means to a prohibited or harmful outcome. This principle justifies proactively shifting from environmentally harmful energy sources to prevent the greater harm of fasād (corruption/decay) on Earth.

Lā ḍarar wa lā ḍirār

No harm, no reciprocating harm. This legal maxim justifies proactively reducing harmful emissions by switching to renewables as preventing harm.

Mā lā yatimmu al-wājib illā bihi fa-huwa wājib

If fulfilling stewardship and preventing harm requires clean energy, then enabling measures (policies, procurement) become obligatory.

Al-ghurm bil-ghunm

Liability accompanies benefit. Those who benefit from energy use must manage the associated harms and risks.

Islamic Concepts

Khilāfah

The role of humanity as vicegerents or trustees of God, charged with responsibly stewarding creation.

Fasād

Corruption, mischief, or any act that causes harm and decay on earth, which believers are commanded to prevent.

Isrāf

Wastefulness and extravagance in the use of resources, which is prohibited.

Amanah

Trusteeship over resources implies careful, transparent energy choices for the public interest.
