Sustainable Land Use and Biodiversity Support
Assesses whether the organization practices sustainable land use and actively supports local biodiversity on its property. This includes land management and 'site ecology' measures such as green roofs, walls, planters, tree pits, and car-park verges where ground space is limited. It evaluates the commitment to being a responsible steward (khalīfah) through risk-managed, measurable, and legally compliant actions.
| Metric | Biodiversity & Resource Improvement Index |
|---|---|
| Target | Year 1: Baseline; Year 2: +10% improvement |
| Frequency | Annual |
| Method | Metric 1: % Native Species Area + Metric 2: Water/Chemical Reduction % |
| Unit | Percentage/Volume |
Level 1: Initial/Ad-hoc
Initial: Land use is unmanaged. There is no awareness of biodiversity, legal obligations (e.g., nesting birds), or chemical risks. Practices may inadvertently harm the local environment.
Level 2: Developing
Developing: Basic awareness exists. Some ad-hoc actions taken (e.g., planting), but without risk assessments, chemical controls, or strategic planning.
Level 3: Established
Defined: A formal policy and legal compliance check are in place. Baseline data for water/biodiversity is established. Sustainable practices (native plants, water saving) are implemented with safety controls.
Level 4: Advanced
Managed: Targets are set and achieved (e.g., +10% native area). Trustees receive annual reports on environmental risks and performance. Contractors are managed via strict specifications.
Level 5: Optimizing
Optimizing: The organization is a leader in stewardship. It actively restores habitats, partners with experts, and publicly shares 'Eco Stewardship' outcomes and data to inspire the community.
Organisation Types
By Organisation Size
| Size | Applicability | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | exempt | Disproportionate; micro charities rarely manage significant land requiring formal policies, budgets, or COSHH assessments. |
| Small | optional | Nice-to-have if managing small grounds; basic legal checks (e.g., nesting birds) apply, but formal policies and site maps are disproportionate. |
| Medium | partial | Applies if managing grounds; requires basic legal checks and COSHH compliance, but formal site maps and dedicated budgets can be scaled down. |
| Large | full | |
| Major | full |
