CWE-ES-08 Compassion, Welfare & Environment Environment & Sustainability CORE Excellence v2.9.7

Sustainable Land Use and Biodiversity Support

Assesses whether the organization practices sustainable land use and actively supports local biodiversity on its property. This includes land management and 'site ecology' measures such as green roofs, walls, planters, tree pits, and car-park verges where ground space is limited. It evaluates the commitment to being a responsible steward (khalīfah) through risk-managed, measurable, and legally compliant actions.

Assessment Questions
  1. Does the organization have a formal policy for sustainable land use that includes a budget, roles, and an annual legal compliance check?
  2. What is the baseline for native planting and resource use, and what are the specific improvement targets for the next 12-24 months?
  3. How are risks managed regarding chemical use (COSHH, IPM) and the siting of biodiversity features (hygiene, pests)?
  4. How does the organization monitor and report on at least two key indicators (one biodiversity, one resource-use) to the leadership/trustees?
  5. In what ways does the organization use its property for community education on Islamic environmental ethics (mīzān, fasād)?
Evidence Requirements
  • Policy document, site map showing habitats/planted zones, and legal compliance record (e.g., TPO check).
  • COSHH assessments, pesticide application logs (or zero-use statement), and risk assessments for biodiversity features.
  • Baseline-and-target KPI dashboard showing water usage and biodiversity metrics.
  • Planting list with native status and supplier details; contractor specifications/management records.
  • Photos of educational signage/events and annual reports to trustees/public.
Scoring Guidelines
LevelRatingDescription
5 5/5 Habitat enhancement/restoration project + partnership + demonstrable improvement vs baseline + public annual report.
4 4/5 ≥2 biodiversity features + ≥15% native planting + pesticide use minimized/zero + annual education with metrics.
3 3/5 Policy/plan + 1 biodiversity feature + water strategy + baseline of 2 KPIs established.
2 2/5 Limited practices (e.g., some planting) but lacks formal policy, risk assessment, or monitoring.
1 1/5 No sustainable land use practices evident or practices are harmful/non-compliant.
